Italy is the 6th world economic power. Italy belongs to the G8 (Italy held its Presidency in 2009) and it is a member of the European Union, OECD, and the G20.
Italy is the world's 7th larger exporter and the world's 5th largest industrial goods producer. The Italian economy is specialized both in high quality consumer goods and in products requiring advanced design and engineering. One of the strength of the economy lies in the dynamism of small and medium sized firms, often located in specialized clusters. Italy's major industries are: engineering and construction, precision machinery manufacturing, motor vehicles, electrical goods, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, tourism, food processing, furnitures, textiles, clothing and footwear.
Italy is a land of creativity, centrally located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. It is a crucial crossroads for land, sea and air routes in and out of Europe. With a population of 60 million and a direct access to the EU market (500 million consumers), a highly-skilled workforce and a unique style of living, Italy offers an ideal location for companies wishing to expand their international market share.
Italian exports of goods to Australia amounted to AUD 5 billion in 2009, making Italy the third Australian supplier within the EU and the 11th overall. Albeit still relatively low compared to potential, Italian investments are fast growing as Italian businesses increasingly see Australia as a base for expansion into Asia.
