Abruzzo earthquake
Solidarity initiatives
“In the past days Italy has rallied round the families and citizens of Abruzzo, in this time of pain and suffering. We felt the most sincere solidarity from many parts of the world, from nations close and far away. This participation to our grief has been of great comfort to us. Through messages and declarations, we received a testimony of friendship, which instil into us hope and confidence. I wish to thank you most heartedly, on behalf of the Italian people, for the expressions of solidarity which were sent to me. Italy knows it has many friends throughout the world. We will never forget this.”
Giorgio Napolitano
President of the Italian Republic
An earthquake of 6.3 magnitude occurred in Abruzzo on the 6th of April 2009, killing 294 persons and making homeless more than 63 thousand people. To assist the population affected by the earthquake, 168 tent camps have been established with the support of 12 thousand volunteers. 3 million Euros are spent every day. Important financial resources have been earmarked by the Government, for a total amount of 8 billion Euros to be spent in three years. This amount will be covered not with tax increases but through streamlining and redirection of public funds. With the emergency phase (for which 1.5 billion Euros have been allocated) gradually fading out, the focus is now shifting to the reconstruction phase (for which 6.5 billion Euros have been allocated). Fifteen areas have been identified for the construction of anti seismic houses to be built in the next 5/6 months, in order to temporarily accommodate the displaced families before next winter. The size of these units will be 50/60 sq.m. They will be fully serviced and of low carbon impact. Once the displaced people will leave these temporary houses for new permanent locations, the areas will be reconfigured as a university campus. The Italian Government will move the July G8 Summit venue from La Maddalena to L’Aquila, the city symbolising the earthquake that hit Abruzzo. The Guardia di Finanza Non-Commissioned Officers’ School is the likely venue for an austere G8 increasingly alive to the issue of natural calamity-related risk prevention, aversion and management. The G8 Summit in L’Aquila will provide a unique opportunity to have the attention of the world focus on the reconstruction needs. Special attention will be devoted to the restoration of the 44 major cultural heritage sites severely damaged by the earthquake. Below are a list of proposed initiatives.
